What to Say, When to Say It—Part 2

A Funny Thing Happened…

When public figures step out of character, we pay attention. This is especially true when comedians stop trying to make us laugh, and instead try to make us listen.

This was exactly what happened when family-friendly comedian Jim Gaffigan began calling out the lies of Donald Trump vis a vis the Republican National Convention.

As the Convention was wrapping on it’s final night, Gaffigan unloaded his beliefs about the president and the party in a series of tweets that was received in awe by non-Republican Gaffigan fans, and in shock by Republican Gaffigan followers.

The exchange that ensued was certainly tabloid-worthy with Gaffigan accusing Twitter bots for the onslaught of conservative backlash, then applauding the loss of followers because of his out-of-character move.

Jim Gaffigan is hilarious. I had the chance to see him perform live years ago, and I have to say the jokes about Hot Pockets don’t get old. He’s a stout, white Catholic man with a big family and his jokes, though fully G-rated, really pack a punch.

What also packed a punch, and a good one that that, was vocalizing his stance. I applaud that he took the chance to share his thoughts on what’s happening to our country politically. I thank him for his bravery and conviction.

For a comedian to shift away from his art form, if only for a Twitter minute, says that we cannot hold in our beliefs. That is, after all, what this country is all about. Speaking our minds is our unspoken right, and that is not a laughing matter. It’s by far, one of the most patriotic things we can do.
